The price of crude palm oil in March 2018 was below $700 per metric ton, recording the lowest rate since March 2016 for the commodity. It is still above the January 2016 low of $550 per metric ton, but far below the $800 per metric ton price of January 2017. These two countries together produced around 85 per cent of the global output of palm oil in 2007, which was 39 million tonnes. This is equivalent to a doubling in the production of palm oil since 1995. The global production of palm oil is expected to grow to around 75.7 million metric tons in the marketing year 2019/2020, up from approximately 70.5 million metric tons in 2017/2018.
